⚠️ Important: Stonewash Pigment surfaces must be sealed after application. If left unsealed, dry pigment washes will dissolve upon contact with water.

Mixing & Basic Application Guide

Mixing Ratios

Stonewash pigments are packaged by weight in powdered form. Mix thoroughly with water according to your desired opacity:

• Light / Sheer Wash: 1 teaspoon pigment per quart of water.

• Medium to Full Saturation: 3 tablespoons (approx. 10% by weight) per quart of water.

2-Step Standard Application

1. Apply Color Wash: Using a soft sponge, rub the diluted Stonewash mixture over your fully prepared PROTEK Acrylic Plaster surface until you reach the desired shade and color saturation. Allow to dry completely.

2. Distress & Highlight: Because the wash is not permanently fixed prior to sealing, gently rub the surface with a damp, flat cellulose sponge to reduce pigment density in key areas. This creates realistic tonal shifts and a natural stone look.

Sealing the Finish

To protect your design, apply a protective topcoat once the pigment is dry:

• Dead-Flat Look: Roll on Zero Gloss Clear Varnish with a short-pile roller for an authentic, unpolished stone aesthetic.

• Satin / Low Sheen Look: Apply any standard acrylic wall wax to enhance color pop and add subtle luster.

Advanced Specialty Techniques & Patinas

Stonewash Pigments are exceptionally effective over metallic waxes and clay paints, bringing depth and realism to faux architectural finishes.

1. Faux Verdigris Copper Finish

1. Apply Stonewash Copper using the standard application steps.

2. Apply Bimin Colored Clay Paint sparingly over the copper base; let dry for 2 hours.

3. Using a damp rag, rub off selected areas of clay paint, feathering the edges to simulate natural aging.

4. (Optional) Apply a Black Stonewash wash for extra shadow and rub off dry excess.

5. Seal with Zero Gloss Varnish, optionally dabbing Satin Wax onto select copper areas to make the metal highlights pop.

2. Oxidized Rusted Steel Finish

1. Roll on two coats of Black Acrylic Venetian Plaster.

   • Coat 1: Thin coverage with minimal texture.

   • Coat 2: Heavier layer; knock back with a trowel, then flatten and smooth before letting it cure for 1 hour.

2. Randomly apply ‘Rust’ Clay Paint to mimic natural rust patterns on steel. Once dry, rub in with a wet rag to blend.

3. Sponge Black Stonewash Pigment over the surface, working it into the design.

4. Roll on Zero Gloss Varnish to seal. Apply Satin Wax sparingly to non-rusted areas for industrial steel contrast.

3. Faux Leather & Snakeskin Effects

By combining layered Stonewash pigments with textured trowel work and selective wax sealers, applicators can also replicate high-end leather and reptilian wall textures.
